Unmedical Medical exists for the spouses, parents, kids, and friends who suddenly find themselves responsible for someone else’s health. We’re not here to sell miracle cures or bury you in medical jargon. We’re here to teach real skills, share hard-earned lessons, and give you the kind of straight talk you wish someone had given you sooner.

This is a space for caregivers to learn, laugh, vent, and get the tools they need to keep going. Whether you’re battling red tape, running on fumes at 3 AM, or just trying to remember the last time you ate something besides vending machine crackers — you’re in the right place.

The Unmedical Manual for Caregivers

After more than 20 years in hospitals, nursing homes, and people’s living rooms, I realized the skills I taught my patients — and their families and friends — were not common outside my patient population. Inside the medical world, these things feel like second nature. Outside, they’re a mystery.

I wrote The Unmedical Manual to close that gap. It’s not about textbook protocols. It’s about translating big, scary medical jargon into plain, human language so you can provide safe, compassionate care without losing yourself in the process. It’s here to make care a little less terrifying, and a lot more human both the caregiver and the one being cared for.

My name is j.w Adams and I am a husband, father, veteran, nurse, clown, musician, writer, painter, poet, and tattoo artist (though not always in that order). After decades in healthcare, I’m returning to my roots as an artist and writing literary fiction that wrestles with the human condition, recording and performing music, painting, tattooing, and just being a boring ol’ husband and dad.
